hey and welcome! If you’re reading this….
…you’re probably doing some research into finding a therapist or coach. You’ve likely read countless profiles that promise a safe, non judgmental environment where you can grow into your best self, right? Well all of that is true here too, but let’s talk about what you really need to know: how I work.
To put it simply, I believe we are travelers on this journey. I’m not your guide, provider or healer and you’re not my client, user, or patient in a passive sense. We’re both learning from each other. That said, I know the expectation is still that I share my knowledge and help you reach your destination by leaning on my education and training.
"The therapist must be real. If you hide behind technique, the patient will also hide." -Irvin D. Yalom
HERE’S how I APPROACH that…
First, I’m very honest with my clients. If you’re doing something that isn’t helping you or is getting in the way of the goals you’ve set, I’m going to tell you. Most of my clients appreciate that I “keep it real” and find the gentle nudge helpful.
Second, even though I’m pretty good at what I do, there’s no way 50 minutes a week will give you everything you need. That’s why I often assign homework (not every session…don’t worry, this isn’t school), and I will absolutely reassign homework for my naughty clients who try to skip out. We collaborate on what will actually be most beneficial for you.
Lastly, I encourage my clients to read. Yes, you read that right, not just breathe or journal, but also read. Throughout the therapy, or therapy -ish process, I suggest books with easy action steps tied directly to your goals, or sometimes ones that help spark a mindset shift.
